6th grade science project

I honestly don't think I did my own science project in 6th grade.  At MacArthur Elementary, my school in 6th grade, we choose an important person in history and had a "wax museum" with our research posters.  We posed as the historical person while families, teachers, and peers walked through.  There were favorite people who you saw repeated like Albert Einstein and Abraham Lincoln.  I was the only Nellie Bly.

It has been pretty amazing seeing Elliot do his science project and see all the creative ones his peers did.  Elliot's science project was taking Crayola and off brand markers and coloring lines on a page to see what brand lasted the longest before drying out.  Not surprisingly Crayola won.

Avery did a popular science project with bubble gum, although not quite the same as other students.  Avery had three brands of bubble gum which she measured the bubble size.  Bubble Yum made the largest bubbles.  It was the perfect science project for Avery because she loves gum.

I got my good camera out for these headshots and it makes me want to break it out more often.  I forget how good my DSLR camera is, especially with my new lens.

Back to my phone for these poster photos. We thought the balloons added some fun dimension that looks a bit like bubble gum. :)

Avery didn't win an award but we felt good about her poster since we started and finished it the night before it was due - because that's what you do, right?! ;)

Beatrix turned three!

So crazy that my baby is now three!  She's been looking forward to her birthday for a long time.  On Avery's birthday Beatrix kept saying Avery was opening Baa's presents.  That's when we taught Bea that her birthday is April 30th.  She's been telling everyone "my birthday is April firtief".  Just the cutest.

For her birthday she got the striped dress and the princess dress she wore all day.  Avery got clothes for her birthday so Bea asked for clothes too.  They're both my fashionistas.  She also got bath letters, chalk and twin snake gummies.

Even before school they were out there using the chalk.

We had to go to our favorite breakfast place at Joe's Farmgrill.  So good!

Like last month, I waited until last minute to do my monthly hike so we went to a favorite place, Spook Hill.  It's in Mesa and under a mile but pretty steep so a good burn.  I carried Beatrix half the time and got twice the burn. :)

Elliot was great about keeping her safe and being a helpful big brother.

More chalk.  :)  I need to plant those azeleas (flowers in the back), just need to weed first.

Whipped together a cake box cake and everyone was happy with it.  Went with yellow cake, chocolate frosting.  Beatrix snuck these sprinkles in the shopping cart a couple weeks ago and I ended up buying them anyway.  Perfect for her birthday cake! ;)

In church today Bea was using her normal *loud* voice saying things like "HI DADDY" while Andrew was on the stand, or "MOMMY, YOU DIDN'T SAY AMEN" right after sacrament prayer.  She cracks us up!

party time

Avery really wanted a birthday party this year (it wasn't an option last year with Covid) so last Saturday we threw her one!  She wanted lots of school friends, plus we had Lexie Weber and Natalie, and of course Zara and Beatrix!  I whipped up a cake for her which is messy and so much fun, just like Avery! ;)

We started off playing the monster drawing game, ate pizza and snacks, and answered fun questions to get to know each other better.

Beatrix was in heaven at this girls party.  Don't be fooled, she was not interested in pizza, only Doritos.

We had to get some group photos with everyone under the balloon garland.  This is our first attempt of a balloon garland and it's not terrible.  Zara and Avery helped and we learned as did it.  Blue and teal are her favorite colors.

The party was pizza and movie night.  We let the girls choose the movie; either Parent Trap with Lindsay Lohan, or Yes Day (a new family movie with Jennifer Garner).  We went for Yes Day but wished we went the other since a few of the girls had seen it already and weren't that interested. It was still a good time.

After the movie we sang to Avery and shared some cake, everyone had some! Then Avery opened her presents and gave one big group hug.  So many fun and thoughtful gifts!  What a fun group of girls.  So glad Avery got to have the party she wanted and felt special.

lucky yard sale finds

Sara called me last Friday to tell me about a yard sale she went to.  There were clarinets for sale and she wondered if we were interested for Elliot.  Yes!  Andrew and I were just talking about this last week.  We have been renting a clarinet from Milanos the last 5 years or so and the rent has added up to over $1000.  More than enough to buy.

Dad came to the yard sale with me and there were many band instruments for sale since the lady selling is a retired band teacher and has her own in-home repair shop.  In the end I ended up buying a clarinet for Elliot for $300 which will last him through high school and had new pads and was polished.  I also got a great brand flute for Zara, who wants to start band this summer, for $175.  Both instruments will hold their value in years to come as long as they're taken care of and are better instruments than ones we would rent and makes more financial sense in the long run so we're really happy about this!

Avery started flute about a month ago until the end of the school year and is using a school flute so she's been showing Zara how to put a flute together and how to make a sound (always hard on a flute in the beginning).  Rupert is feeling a little left out and wants his own instrument too, so I'm glad he's looking forward to when he's old enough to join school band or orchestra.

Music is very important to me and I love seeing my kids choose their own instruments and learn to read music too.

Andrew surgery

Yesterday marked 6 weeks since Andrew's hernia surgery recovery on February 10.  Six weeks is that time for a full recovery and he's come a long way since day one.  I'm already starting to forget how those early days were.  I remember Andrew being drugged after, but still in a lot of pain, and say something like "Beatrix can only see me through a screen for a while".  I thought it was funny, the way he said it didn't sound like normal Andrew, but his concern was genuine since Beatrix has a habit of climbing all over daddy and wanting to be held.  The first few weeks Andrew wasn't meant to hold anything heavier than 10 lbs. so that wouldn't work out for Bea.

The top left photo was on the way home.  No the most flattering ;) but funny how serious Andrew can look.  The top right was day one at home, post surgery nap.  He napped everyday for a week.  His body knew it needed a lot of rest to recover the trauma of hernia surgery.  Thankfully Andrew was able to take a few sick days and then work from home for another week or so.

Getting Andrew out of the car and in bed post surgery was a 10 minute process.  It was the first time I thought Andrew looked his age.  He's so youthful and happy that he comes across younger but not in that moment.

From day two Andrew needed to have a 10 minute walk twice a day.  Bea liked to be a part of this.

This is not Andrew's first hernia surgery. 12 years ago Andrew was biking a lot to his work in Tempe, at that time.  He's record distance was 35 miles and soon after that his hernia was discovered.  The surgery was right about the time I was 38 weeks along with Avery when we bought our house and were fixing it up to move in.  Not the most convenient time.  That surgery was laparoscopic, so two smaller incisions outside the hernia area.

Remember when Andrew biked 40 miles on his 40th birthday?  Well, later that week Andrew felt a bump on his other side which turned out to be another hernia!  Because of covid it took a couple months to get a surgery appointment since it's outpatient and not an emergency.  The last week or two before surgery were very painful and uncomfortable for him so we were glad to finally have it taken care of.

This time instead of a laparoscopic surgery his doctors recommended open repair, which is a larger incision at the sight of the hernia.  This is a better option because its less likely to have complications or recurrence but healing is more painful and longer, similar to a c section.

Notice the pillow buffer on the picture below. ;)

Now that 6 weeks are up Andrew is pretty much back to normal!  He started working out again on Monday, which will be slow going, and hopefully we'll hop on a bike again.  Thankfully the Tour de Tucson 100 mile bike race was postponed from Andrew to September of this year so he'll have plenty of time to work up those miles again.

So proud of Andrew and am grateful for our amazing bodies that heal and recover.

Michelle & Riley

Just got these photos done from when the Weber's visited Christmas week.  We just took a few minutes of their visit to snap some headshots and cute couple photos in our front yard.  These people are pure gold.  They're the real deal, and it's been fun taking some of their photos over the years like these ones in 2019.  Michelle is such a babe, I mean look at her!

Riley is a foodie and so much fun too!

We visited them in New Mexico last year and can't wait to see them again.  Their kids just get along so well with our kids and Riley and Andrew get along so well, just like Michelle and me.  Besties all around. I made video of that trip here.

Maybe some day they'll live in Arizona again.

Valentine’s Day

These photos uploaded out of order since I’m writing from my phone (I usually post from the computer) and that’s ok.  We had a great Valentine’s Day this year! It was actually really fun having it on a Sunday. Andrew stayed home in bed most of the day (more about his hernia surgery on a future post) and I took the kids to church and had Relief Society on zoom and it was nice having Andrew home and not in church meetings half the day.

Avery’s  cookie and card from the photo above were
from Bishop Ashcroft. Elliot didn’t understand why he didn’t get one too. It is funny how girls are meant to be spoiled on Valentine’s Day even though it’s a day of love for everyone. Not complaining!

These are some Valentines that came in the mail from the Manning family. I love seeing the kids in all their red, pink, and white.

Here are what I have the kids and Andrew. The kids got a valentine, conversation hearts, a mini box of chocolates, airheads, and a chocolate carmel. Andrew got his favorite Heinz baked beans, mushy peas, Mars bar, Aero chocolate, and Cadbury. Basically some English things he loves and misses.  We kept it really simple this year.

The heart shaped pizzas were a big hit for dinner. It’s something I don’t do every year but when we do it really makes dinner extra special.

Hope you had a great Valentine’s Day too!
